Request an Assistive Device
Makers Making Change is an online platform providing designs for over 200+ open-source alternatives to commercially available assistive technologies. You can get a device from the Assistive Devices Library by either:
- Downloading and following the assembly instructions to build a device yourself
- Requesting the device and having a volunteer maker make one for you
Please note: Makers Making Change does not sell assistive devices.
Step 2: Choose a Device
Browse the Assistive Devices Library for a device that meets your needs.To request one, click into the device page and click Create Request . Requests are posted to the Maker Wanted page for volunteer makers to take on.
Since makers are volunteering their skills and time to make devices, requesters are expected to cover material and shipping costs. The total cost can be discussed with the maker once they take on the request, since the price of parts and the price of shipping can both vary with time and location.
Step 3: Chat With Your Volunteer
When a maker volunteers to build your device, you will receive an email notification.
Chat with your volunteer using the chat feature at the bottom of the request page. You can confirm details like expected material and shipping costs, timeline, and any custom changes before your volunteer begins building.
You can always come back to your request by going to My Profile > My Requests and My Builds.
Step 4: Reimburse Material and Shipping Costs
When your volunteer notifies you the device has been built, you can coordinate the delivery method and how to reimburse the material costs and shipping costs if applicable.
We recommend using Interac e-Transfer, PayPal, or Venmo so only an email or user handle is exchanged.
Step 5: Receive Device
When you receive your device, click I Received My Device to let your volunteer know you have the item.
Let others know how the device worked for you by leaving a review on the device page.
