Description
The Teno Helper is an assistive eating device designed for individuals who do not have a functional tenodesis grasp and have limited or no finger dexterity. Its purpose is to allow users to independently pick up and eat finger foods such as sandwiches, pizza, chicken nuggets, fruit slices, crackers, and other handheld foods.
The device would function similarly to a clamp or set of tongs, but unlike traditional clamps, it must be operable without requiring finger pinching, squeezing, or fine motor control. The user should be able to open and close the gripping mechanism using larger arm, wrist, or gross motor movements rather than individual finger movements.
Key design goals include:
- Hands-free gripping action: The clamp should be capable of closing around food without requiring finger dexterity.
- Adaptive activation: Possible mechanisms could include wrist movement, forearm pressure, a push-against-surface action, spring-loaded closure, lever activation, or other gross-motor-operated systems.
- Secure but gentle grip: The clamp must hold a variety of food textures without crushing soft foods or dropping heavier items.
The overall appearance would resemble a compact clamp or adaptive tong-like utensil that extends the user’s ability to grasp and manipulate finger foods independently. The goal is not only functional assistance but also increased independence, dignity, and ease of eating in social and everyday settings.
