Intended Use
The audible basketball would be used by blind and low vision athletes during: Recreational play Physical education classes Adaptive sports programs Community recreation activities Blind basketball training sessions Organized blind basketball competitions Demonstration and awareness events Players would use the audible feedback to locate and track the ball during dribbling, passing, receiving passes, rebounding, and shooting. The ball should be durable enough for frequent use in schools, gymnasiums, community centres, sports facilities, and outdoor courts.
Description
Basketball is one of the most popular sports in the world, yet there is currently no widely available, high-quality audible basketball specifically designed for blind and low vision athletes. While accessible balls exist for some sports, blind and low vision individuals have limited opportunities to fully participate in basketball because a standard basketball provides no auditory feedback.
The goal of this project is to develop a high-quality audible basketball that allows blind and low vision athletes to independently locate, track, dribble, pass, receive, rebound, and shoot the ball. The ball would incorporate a durable sound-producing mechanism that provides reliable audio feedback whenever the ball is moving, while maintaining the key performance characteristics of a traditional basketball.
The design should strive to maintain standard basketball features including size, weight, bounce, grip, balance, and durability. Potential design considerations may include:
- An internal audible system that produces consistent sound during movement.
- Durable construction suitable for regular basketball play.
- Tactile features to assist players in orienting the ball through touch.
- Enhanced grip options for users with varying levels of vision and dexterity.
- Indoor and outdoor usability.
- Low-cost and maker-friendly manufacturing methods.
- Open-source design files that allow future improvements and broader adoption.
This project aims to address a significant accessibility gap in sport and recreation. A successful design could be used by schools, adaptive sports organizations, community recreation programs, and blind basketball programs across Canada and internationally.
As the Executive Director of the Blind Basketball Association of Canada (BBAC), I work directly with blind and low vision athletes and have firsthand knowledge of the barriers they face when trying to access basketball. Through BBAC, I can help identify user requirements, provide ongoing feedback throughout the development process, connect volunteers with blind and low vision athletes, and assist in testing prototypes in real-world environments.
The long-term goal is to create an affordable, practical, open-source audible basketball that promotes inclusion, physical activity, skill development, recreation, and competitive opportunities for blind and low vision athletes of all ages.
