Audible Basketball Hoop System for Blind Athletes
Short Summary
An audible basketball hoop and backboard system that helps blind and low vision athletes locate and orient themselves to the basket through sound-based navigation cues.
Owner
Eli Bomers
Primary User
Blind and low vision athletes, students, and recreational players who need audible cues to independently locate the basketball hoop during training, recreation, physical education, and competitive basketball activities.
Intended Use
The audible hoop and backboard system would be used during: Basketball training and practice Recreational play Physical education programs Adaptive sports programs Community recreation activities Blind basketball competitions Demonstration and awareness events The audio cues would help athletes identify the basket's location when shooting, passing, and navigating the court, increasing independence and participation in basketball activities. The system should be usable in schools, gymnasiums, community centres, and outdoor courts.
Description
Blind and low vision athletes face significant barriers when participating in basketball because they often cannot independently locate the basket during gameplay. Even if an audible basketball is available, players still need a reliable way to identify the position of the hoop when passing, shooting, and navigating the court.
This project would develop an accessible audible basketball hoop and backboard system specifically designed for blind and low vision athletes. The system would provide consistent audio cues that allow players to identify the basket's location without requiring sighted assistance.
Potential design features may include:
- An audio beacon mounted on or near the backboard.
- Adjustable sound levels for various environments.
- Directional audio to help athletes orient themselves toward the basket.
- Portable or permanent mounting options.
- Indoor and outdoor usability.
- Durability suitable for regular basketball activities.
- Low-cost and maker-friendly construction methods.
- Open-source design files for community adoption and improvement.
The system should provide enough audio information for players to independently locate the basket while avoiding excessive noise that could interfere with gameplay. The goal is to support recreational, educational, and competitive blind basketball while increasing independence and accessibility for participants.
As Executive Director of the Blind Basketball Association of Canada (BBAC), I work directly with blind and low vision athletes and have firsthand knowledge of the challenges they face in basketball. Through BBAC, I can provide user requirements, gather athlete feedback, assist with prototype evaluation, and support real-world testing of the design.
The long-term objective is to create an affordable, practical, and open-source accessible basketball hoop system that can be used by schools, adaptive sports programs, community organizations, and blind basketball programs throughout Canada and internationally.
