Questions To Ask Yourself When Booking An Event

Who is my audience?

What is the age and experience levels of my volunteer club members?
  • If it's a younger audience or an audience who has never soldered we suggest an easier build like the Low Profile Switch, Raindrop Switch, or Light Touch Switch. These are examples of a great first build for a beginner audience.

How much time do we have for the event?

We suggest a minimum of an hour and a half, but this will depend on what you are building.
  • Having more time gives space for talking about your club, where the devices are being donated, and to talk about the safety of using the tools for the build.

What does the space look like?

Does the space have tables, chairs, and plug ins? Are you allowed to solder in the space? Do I have permission to use the space and supervision if necessary?
  • We always recommend ensuring the space is aware of the style of event you are hosting!

What am I building and why?

What is the plan for these completed devices?
  • As a club leader you may have a plan for your devices already. If not please refer to the outreach document or connect with a mmc staff to help support you in deliveries info@makersmakingchange.com

What tools do I have/ still need to get?

Look at the build list of materials as well as the assembly guide to confirm what may need to be purchased. 
  • We recommend confirming tools at least two weeks in advance to ensure they have time to arrive prior to the event.

Steps to find the files you need to build a device:
  1. Ensure you are logged into your Makers Making Change account
  2. Click on the Assistive Devices tab on the website
  3. Search the device you would like to build, for example: Low Profile Switch
  4. Click into the device and scroll until you find the project link.
  5. Click the project link, if the project is on GitHub you will find
    1. Build Files: This is where you will find the 3D print materials
    2. Documentation: This is where you will find the Maker/Assembly Guide and the Bill of Materials (BOM)

What materials do I need?

Look at the build list of materials as well as the assembly guide to confirm what may need to be purchased. If you need to 3D print supplies consider how long it will take to get the materials printed. 
  • We recommend reviewing materials at least a few weeks in advance to ensure you are leaving time for ordering and 3d printing.

Have I reviewed the build materials and confirmed I have all the necessary items?

Double check that you have everything prepared for the event. This is a space where you can reach out to the MMC team with any questions.
  • We have videos going through some of the built devices as well have some slideshow examples to help you run your event!
