SaskPower Staff in Saskatoon Learn New Skills for a Good Cause

On November 15th, SaskPower staff in Saskatoon came together to work on a noble cause — adapting toys for children with disabilities.

SaskPower staff learned new skills like soldering and put them to good use, building 15 Interact Switches and adapted an assortment of 26 toys. These switches and adapted toys, which use the switches, will allow kids with disabilities to play independently, by allowing the child to press a larger switch to activate the toy instead of a small button on the toy that is hard or impossible for the kid to access.

 

“It’s great to challenge myself at work by learning a new skill while also helping people in need,” says Kelsey Seidle, one of the SaskPower employees who participated in the build. 

“[It was a] great team building event that helped me to work closely with my colleagues towards one goal.”

The toys and switches were delivered to Wascana Rehabilitation Centre, Theraplay Saskatoon, Alvin Buckwold Child Development Program, and Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools.

This event is one of hundreds of similar Makers Making Change events happening across Canada through to the end of December as part of Neil Squire’s #HackingForTheHolidays campaign. Hacking for the Holidays has a fundraising goal of $100,000 and the aim of building 2,000 toys, switches, and video game joysticks for children with disabilities.
