Device Information

Overview

The Customizable Head Pointer helps people with limited hand or arm mobility independently access and interact with keyboards, tablets, touchscreens, books, and other everyday objects. Designed to be lightweight, affordable, and customizable, it can be tailored to each user's unique needs.

Traditional head pointers can be costly and may offer limited customization options. This design provides a low-cost alternative that can be adapted to the individual user for improved comfort and usability.

Users can choose from different pointer materials depending on their needs—whether for pressing keys, turning pages, manipulating objects, or interacting with touchscreen devices.

How To Use

Once fitted and assembled, the head pointer is worn on the user's head, allowing them to press keys, activate buttons, navigate touchscreens, turn pages, and interact with everyday objects using natural head movements.

Disability Type Description

Designed for individuals who have limited hand or arm mobility and require an alternative method to access technology and interact with physical objects.

Build Instructions

Detailed assembly instructions for measuring and customizing the head pointer and all design files are available at https://volksswitch.org/index.php/volks-devices/customizable-head-pointer/.

The head mount can be printed for about $1.25 worth of filament. Simple elastic is used to hold the mount in place. A wooden dowel can be used as the pointer if you don’t need to interact with a touchscreen. Alternatively, a capacitive pointer can be constructed from aluminum or stainless steel tubing along with a capacitive tip – both of which can be purchased online.
