Project Core 3D Symbols

The Project Core 3D symbols are a set of 3D printable three-dimensional (3D) symbols that represent words in the Universal Core vocabulary. The Universal Core vocabulary is a set of 36 highly useful single words that can be used alone or in combination to communicate for a range of purposes on countless topics with a wide variety of communication partners.

For the 3D symbols, the individual word is indicated with a unique raised element, the printed word, and the word in Braille. The word category is indicated by the shape, texture, and color of the base.

You may also want to consider the Bliss Tactile Symbols, as they are a similar set of tactile symbols that are optimized for 3D printing and extendable to a larger number of words.

No prior training or experience with AAC is necessary to get started. Several formats are available to support student access through direct pointing or touch, eye gaze selection, and partner-assisted scanning. This device is an AAC (augmentative and Alternative Communication) device intended for people who use communication like facial expressions, vocalizations and body movements.

This device only requires 3D printing.

Each symbol is 3D printed with no assembly required. Different types of symbols are intended to be printed in different coloured filament. Print time will vary depending on which symbols are selected. The starter set is approximately 8 hours on an Ender 3; the full-set requires multiples print setups and is closer to 75 hours.
